After recording the division's best-ever Q4 revenue period, Sony is only aiming higher when it comes to PlayStation. For the coming fiscal year (April 2023-March 2024), it estimates shipments of 25 million PS5 consoles, which would be the highest ever for any PlayStation console in history should it achieve it. The total number of PS5s to hit store shelves would then increase to 63.4 million.
Across the same time period, PS4 managed roughly 60 million units, so PS5 would be outpacing the last-gen console at that point. It's possible Sony may well hit the target too, as it managed to ship 19.1 million systems in the fiscal year just done. And that included a period in the beginning when PS5 Stock was still constrained. With stock now free-flowing, though, the estimate doesn't seem completely unrealistic.
Do you think Sony will achieve its estimate? Set your own prediction in the comments below.

They need to establish a stready stream of AAA-games for the coming years. They're already killing it... if they can make that happen, they will be unstoppable.
FFXVI should really help. Also just more current gen only games. While there's a huge difference between playing a PS4 game on a PS4 vs PS5, it's such a bad image that the current gen is just last gen plus better textures, higher res (sometimes) and 30 frames per second more. Some heavy hitters like Uncharted 5 or, dare I say it, Bloodborne 2 (or another exclusive game from Fromsoft) would go a long way, too
@Matroska it feels like FFXVI is the first main line FF in forever (excluded 7remake) with any real market hype.
That game is gonna do wonder for both Sony and SE
@AndyKazama let’s hope the rumours are true and SE become part of the PlayStation family. 🤞
@PSme Why? They are already partnered closely with Sony. The games already exist there. All that would do it stop people on other platforms from enjoying their games.
So incredible to see how Playstation 5 is successful without one single exclusive (mainstream) game, no promising exclusive masterpieces announced (they will be there, but they're not announced) and no real showcase for years. Shows Sony they have to do literally nothing and still sell units..
@Grimwood what's a "promising exclusive masterpiece" in your opinion? 🤨
@Jey887
While I agree with your statement there to be fair the same thing gets said on PureXbox about "Microsoft should buy Sega, Square, Capcom, ABK" etc because it's "good for the industry".
Apparently timed exclusives (like FF) are totally evil but permanent from a purchase of a publisher is the greatest thing for the industry.
@Jey887 quite correct sir. But I fear MS offering SE shareholders waaaayyyy too much money to refuse a buy out if the acti/blizzard deal falls through. I know they are Japanese and all but ya know…… they might find a way to do it.
It'll sell the consoles if it has the games easy as that!As it stands there's barely anything announced and a lot of talk of live service games,sony have built up this popularity from there single player games and people don't want to miss them so well see
It should be noted also that Japanese companies tend to be conservative in their estimates and then revise up during quarterly earnings calls. The year just passed had been initially predicted as 18m and revised up to 19m and hit 19.1M eventually.
25m publicly might mean an internal target of 27-28m with some room to not work out.
And to think guys all of this is even without Sony doing a showcase yet and also before Spider-Man 2 release. Imagine once all this happens.
@GADG3Tx87 Yeah, and it's just as wrong over there. The fanboying clamour for companies to buy others out is so weird. It's just another example of having to 'pick a side' which seems to permeate popular culture.
@Jey887
Absolutely. Sometimes I question my sanity of them and Microsoft stating that buying a publisher is great for the industry because it opens the door to even more gamers.
But all you're doing is excluding an entire platform that already had those games including yourself and every other platform. Who else is there to give it to? You've removed access not increased it.
Either I'm incredibly dumb and can't see their logic (sarcasm) or it's just a bs line to justify punishing other gamers for greed while getting your "team" to cheer for you. And essentially the slow death of player choice and gaming in general.
Once one entity eventually controls a majority, they'll all be sorry when they're held to ransom of "our way of the high way" because they cheered for it. And there's no other way to get those games.
And over the last 24 hours we've seen how stroppy Microsoft can be when they don't get their way. You think they'll be "pro-consumer" when they're in charge? Think again.
I have faith. Great products sell themselves.
@Jey887 we all like gaming, the same as billions like football. They seem okay with ‘picking a side’, why can’t we without being labelled ’fanboys’.
That seems wrong to me. Just my opinion.
@PSme I understand your point and didn't intend to call you a fanboy. Apologies if it seemed that way. I was more referencing the console wars that seem to happen on social media.
Anyways, back on topic, it's going to be a killer year for PS. Let's hope they have some games to announce soon.
@Jey887 No need for your apology, Sir, no offence taken in anyway. Just really hate the term fanboy bandied about so easily. I love PlayStation. Always have. And just want ‘my side’ to be successful ( hence the football analogy). And yes, I agree with you, definitely a banger of a year for PS!
Holy sheet.
Now where is the showcase to make that possible?
@Kanji-Tatsumi
Redfall for him lol
@Grimwood
Who cares it wasn't a ps5 exclusive. It took advantage of it and moved units. Even third party have rarely made next gen games.
It moved more units than returnal, ratchet and demon souls combined. All next gen only.
@PSme
No publishing acquisitions. Bethesda was enough. Everyone has enough studios to compete, make their console worth it.
Deviation should be enough.
@Jey887 I agree. Why waste money on a buyout just to make the games exclusive when they could spend that money on setting up a new studio and work on new games. Then we'll be able to play both FF and the new game/games from the new studio. Win/Win? I do understand the concern that if Sony don't then MS will just buy everyone until there is no more PS, hence why the more buyouts that get blocked the better in my opinion.
@GADG3Tx87
I want Sony and Microsoft to stop doing it now. They'll destroy gaming at this rate if there are no 3rd party devs/pubs at all.
@SolaceCreed love your profile pic!! Go Pingu!!!!
@GodofCapcom so if Sony had the chance to buy SE and make their brand stronger, they should say no and think of other companies first?
Not a criticism, just genuinely interested in you thoughts
It’s crazy how they’ve turned their financial position around. Only 10 years ago they were in the red and people were predicting their demise.
@PSme
I think they should be scrutinize for it. CMA should block it too.
Those would be pretty crazy numbers to hit. Not quite pandemic-era Switch hardware sales numbers, but close.
Really, anything at, near, or especially over 20 million is a figure to celebrate.
@Jey887 "All that would do it stop people on other platforms from enjoying their games."
For most of these people clamoring for an acquisition, that'd be a feature, not a bug.
Nice to see the article point out 25m in the current “fiscal year” as I’m not sure everyone here is up to speed on that sort of thing. Not anyone’s fault, took me like a decade to get used to it, still don’t like it.😂
Does make me wonder if this news coupled with a previous article of Spider-Man 2 releasing “this fiscal year” has Sony planning that games release in early 2024 to sell themed consoles. We all know there will be themed consoles and you don’t need those to sell consoles over the holidays.
Of course the rumored non-disc models may help if it lowers the cost. $500 seems like a lot, and the current discless model is $400, so if Sony can get the new modular model down to $350 that could give them a sales boost.
I wonder if Sony knows when Switch 2 is launching and what that will cost? They aren’t exactly direct competitors but not too many people will buy a Switch 2 and a PS5 in the same month. And I’m one of those weirdos who thinks Switch 2 in March 2024 as there are no Switch games left after Pikmin 4 in July.
@ItsBritneyB_tch I think the ps brand was doing quite well 10 years ago. Since September 2009 with the ps3 slim they turned things around.
But where's the games Sony?
they need a banger showcase showing off a lot of the games they've been working on.
@palmab being developed ?
I only see them manage to pull this off if we get more exclusives this year besides Spidey 2, FF16, and possibly FF7 Rebirth.
